"Mycelium Resources in Architecture and Design" explores how the mycelial structure of fungi can shape the future of architecture and design. The book brings together leading international experts to examine whether mycelium-based materials can replace existing materials or create entirely new forms of industrial production. Through essays, case studies, and interviews, it investigates the potential of these living, resource-efficient biomaterials from scientific, technological, and practical standpoints. Ultimately, the publication reports on current developments and addresses the challenges of integrating renewable materials into circular and sustainable design practices.

For this publication, Henri Uijtterhaegen, Laurens Bekemans, and Ken De Cooman of BC architects & studies & materials contributed the essay "Material Alliances: Toward a Paradigm Shift in the Built Environment." Their text serves as an urgent call to action, arguing that adapting to the realities of climate change requires a collective paradigm shift in how we build, think, and live. The authors outline the necessity of unlearning outdated practices and adopting an "(un)learning by doing" approach, advocating for a community-driven, resource-based environment that breaks down disciplinary boundaries. By shifting mindsets toward alternative building materials, they highlight how practitioners can actively contribute to a low-carbon future and drive meaningful, systemic change in the construction industry.
