BC afterwork x LOPIN

For our upcoming BC afterwork, we invite LOPIN to share about their practice. 

2.1 MT of uncontaminated construction waste soil is excavated each year in the Lyon metropolitan area. Raw earth provides thermal comfort and energy efficiency. It represents a long-standing tradition in the Rhône-Alpes region and a genuine solution for sustainable construction. Lopin repurposes uncontaminated soil from construction sites in the Lyon area by integrating it into raw earth construction practices, thereby conserving a finite resource over the long term and transforming a currently underutilized waste stream into a local, sustainable, and low-carbon resource. Established as an association and aiming to become a SCIC (cooperative of collective interest), Lopin is building a collaborative framework aligned with metropolitan strategies for resource recovery and the circular economy. The association is now opening its first 5,000-square-meter facility in Villeurbanne (69). Through its activities, Lopin supports the development of this sector and the stakeholders in the raw earth construction industry by providing a concrete solution for local sourcing and a solidarity-based economy.

Lopin was co-founded by Amandine Riou and Taïna Lund-Ricard, two architects convinced that construction methods must be reimagined and become concrete tools for preserving the environment. One is deeply rooted in Lyon’s social and solidarity economy and the reuse of materials, while the other brings extensive international experience with complex urban projects; together, they are building a collective initiative dedicated to the raw earth sector.
