Building on the sensory and technical approach of the classic Earth Discovery workshops, this session shifts the focus entirely to bio-sourced materials. The goal is to understand how fibres are transformed into functional, regenerative building elements.
The programme strikes a balance between theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice.
- Material physics: This explores how natural fibres function physically, focusing on their tensile strength, thermal insulation capabilities and moisture regulation.
- Sourcing and selection: Guidelines on how to select the most suitable plant species for specific architectural applications and structural requirements, such as straw, hemp, flax, or bamboo.
The day is structured around practical exercises in processing, mixing, and applying different fibre materials, complemented by a lecture exploring references from vernacular architecture to contemporary usage to improve understanding of the theory.
This workshop is part of the initiative “Stadsatelierdeville”, a hybrid meeting spot where students, contractors, architects and governance actors learn to build a circular future together.
It is a venue where workshops, prototyping, lectures and research on earth construction and circular building takes place.
