Rammed Earth is an ancient sustainable building method of constructing walls, floor and surfaces. Composed of a natural earth mix, rammed earth structures use local materials, meaning they have near zero embodied energy and produce zero waste. The technique involves compressing the earth mix, layer by layer to form the desired structure.
This 2-day immersive workshop is designed to take you deeper into the world of Rammed Earth. Moving beyond the basics, we will explore the technique from the conceptualisation to the mixture, execution and finishing.
We do have a general guidebook on Unfired Earth materials, it's available here. It may be useful to read this before the workshop.
PROGRAM
Introduction & Theoretical (0,5 day)
we offer you an insight in the approach of BC materials on how to transform excavated earth into a Rammed Earth mixture. Through a lecture, we let you travel through some projects where such materials have been applied.
we will guide you through the properties, design guidelines and implementation guidelines. Where does it make sense to use rammed earth? How to make a suitable mixture?
Practical (1,5 day)
During a hands-on workshop you will be able to make a mixture, understand the right humidity, make a rammed earth wall, polish the surface,... This allows you to try out all processing steps such as mixing, ramming, finishing.
- The Design Scale: focus on precision and detail by meticulously crafting a design object. You will learn how to achieve fine finishes and handle the material delicately. Bonus: You get to take this object home with you!
- The Structural Scale: We will shift to the macro level, working together to erect a rammed earth wall or structural element. This covers formwork, heavy mixing, and the physical techniques required for construction.
